About the classroom
A little about myself
My name is Dana Bengtson. This is my 10th year teaching CID in District 196. I obtained my Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education with a preprimary focus, and my Master’s in Emotional Behavioral Disorders from Mankato State University. I obtained my license in Autism from St. Thomas. I have two children, Hunter 11 and Hayden 8. Hayden attends Highland and is in 3rd grade. Hunter attends Groves Academy and is in 6th grade. My husband, children and I live with our dog, Ginger in Burnsville.
Here are some things that I would like you to know about this school year.
I feel very fortunate to have a great team working with me in the classroom. Judy, Biddi and Deb will be in the classroom to help with student support and learning. They are all experienced paraprofessionals and educators and will be helping to teach and care for your child.
Jill Glosemeyer—Speech and Language
Phil Stromme—Adapted Physical Education
Abbey O’Donnell-Occupational Therapy
Danielle Zick—Music Specialist
Please let us know if your child will be eating breakfast at school. Students will have a snack time every day, as part of our social skills curriculum. I ask parents to send money as I will purchase snacks for the classroom. When our snack supple runs low, I will ask you to send more money to replenish the supply.
You are able to put money into your lunch account through the Highland website. Please contact DeeDee in the office if you need your login code.
A 3-ring binder will be in your child’s backpack each day to serve as a communication tool between home and school. It is very helpful for me to know about news from home. Please write about things that are going on at home so that we can use them to start conversations here at school. It is also helpful to be updated on things that may affect your child’s day, for example changes in routine, lack of sleep, etc. I will write a general overview of your child’s day and any other needed info daily. If there is another way you would prefer to communicate with me please let me know that too. Most information from the school will be distributed on Fridays, however please check your child’s backpack daily. Some forms may need to be returned to school, so please check for any items that may need attention.
Once a month I will send home book orders. You are welcome to order books for your family, but please do not feel obligated.
My goal is to work closely with you throughout the year to ensure consistent communication regarding your child’s progress. I will value your insights about your child’s strengths and challenges. It will be important to communicate on a regular basis. Please call me at the Highland’s main office 952-423-7595. The best times to reach me are between 7:45-8:20 am or 2:35-3:45 pm. If the matter is urgent please call me at anytime. I am also available through e-mail—firstname.lastname@example.org (Note the T is before the S).
I look forward to working with you and your child throughout the school year!
