Reading to your child or with your child is the single most important thing you can do help your child be a better reader.

First Grade Reading Notes
Currently in my 1st grade reading groups, I am reinforcing the "word wall words" presented by the classroom teacher, working on reading strategies for decoding new words, and introducing 1-2 new books each week. The strategies I am working on are using the pictures as clues, looking at beginning sounds and "what would make sense" in that sentence. I am your child's additional reading teacher as a support to the classroom teacher. Title kids get an extra "dose" of reading M-Th each week.
I enjoyed meeting some of you at conferences this month. Some of my conferences overlapped, but I tried to attend as many as I could. The best thing you can do as a parent is read to your child daily and listen to their reading! Also, make sure they see YOU reading too!!

First Grade Math Notes
Currently in my first grade math groups, I have been working with the students one-on-one to find out their needs and the skills they already have in place. I am assessing them on their forward and backward number sequences, number ID(to 30) and adding groups of items together. I am also attaching the addition sentence to the task so they see the connection between the manipulatives and the numerical representation of that process.
I am also working on making combinations to 5 using bead strings, cubes and finger patterns and then moving on the combinations to 10.

Third and Fourth Grade Reading
Currently in 3rd & 4th grade reading, I am also implementing the "Daily 5 & Cafe" model of literacy which supports what they are doing in their classroom. I am doing this along with the basic guided reading group format-working with 2-4 students at a time. I am focusing on fluency right now which is an area where most of them need extra support as well as comprehension. I meet with the title students during their classroom literacy block so they do not miss other learnings in their classrooms.
I enjoyed meeting with some of you at conferences and if you have any quetions. please let me know.
As most of you know by now, we have started our home reading connection program and we have started sending home book bags. Please try to read with your child at night whenever possible and we will continue to replenish the book bags 2 times a week.
