Welcome to 8th Grade Communications

I teach 8th grade on RED days. This class involves working on various skills throughout the year in order to help students become better communicators. This includes public speaking, group work, technology, public speaking, theater, media and persuasion. This class will also work on reading skills throughout the year, particularly on Friday which we call our F.I.R.E. days (Fun and Interesting Reading Environment). On these days, students may hear from a mystery reader or do a reading related activity. They will also have a mini lesson on some kind of reading strategy and be given time for SSR (Silent Sustained Reading)

PEN PALS FROM TURKEY!!
Students in Mrs. Gernandt’s 8th Grade Communications classes have arranged for pen pals from Turkey this year. We wrote them earlier this year and recently received correspondence from them. Their goal is to learn and improve their English as well as learn about our culture. We are aware of their limited English; however, we have still gotten some chuckles from their letters that have been addressed to “Dear Sincerely Dylan” or “My family population is of 4.” Soon we will be video conferencing with them and will continue to email or write them as we continue to learn each other’s culture. We have sent them examples of our currency, an American flag, and information about our state and city. They have in turn shared similar information with us, some of them sharing others gifts such as jewelry. It is a fun learning experience for all! Ask your child about his/her pen pal! |
