Welcome to Mr. Niedenthal's Communications class

While we will look at a lot of different topics this year, we will especially focus on interpersonal communication, public speaking and reading.

The Needles Highway in South Dakota was awesome, but so was my book!

OUTSIDE READING

Ten percent of the final grade in my class is based on reading outside of the classroom. The information listed below is from a handout the students got the first week of school.

HANG TEN SURF CHALLENGE

The goal of the HTSC is to help you grow as a reader, both in the amount of reading you do and in the variety of materials you read.

DETAILS: 10% of your grade in Communications is based on reading outside of school. Each student will read their way through a series of levels. The first level will be the minimum amount of reading needed to earn a C for 10% of your Communications grade. The highest level will be the amount of reading needed to earn an A+ (EXTRA CREDIT) for 10% of your grade.

• Outside Reading is defined as when a student reads any book, fiction or non-fiction, outside the hours of the school day. (a big exception to this rule is books read with Ms. Sparks)
• SHMS textbooks do not count.
• Anthologies of cartoons or comics do not count.
• Up to 200 pages of your reading may be graphic novels.
• Grades will be based on the number of pages read.
• Students must read 300 pages or 10% of their grade will be a zero.
• Reading aloud to someone doubles the number of pages read. EXCEPTION: reading a children’s book aloud to a child counts as 10 pages per book.
• Students are responsible for picking up and turning in reading sheets each week.
• Reading sheets must have parent signature.
• Reading sheets may be placed in telly at any time.
• Once you have achieved an A+ for the trimester you immediately begin accumulating pages for next trimester.
