      October News!

October continues to be a busy
and exciting time in my kindergarten room! We have settled into classroom routines and rules, become familiar and comfortable in our classroom and school, and have made many new friends!

We are diving into all areas of Literacy! We are working hard in Writer's Workshop this month. Your child is now writing, or beginning to write his/her own story. Every child will be working at their own level of development! We are drawing our pictures, stretching out words, writing, and sharing our stories with a partner. We are continuing to develop our reading skills during Reader's Workshop. We are learning and practicing good reading habits every day. We are working on our "little books", which support our handwriting curriculum. We are working on letters that are formed in similar ways (o,c,a,g,q,). We practice writing these letters on the SMARTBOARD and then read write the book that corresponds to the letter. I encourage you to have your child practice reading these books regularly at home! In Phonics, we are working on Rhyming words, recognizing syllables, and initial consonant sounds.

Math continues to consist of exploration, sorting, counting, and number recognition. We are counting on the calendar and how many days we have been in school every day. We practice counting forward and backward. We have Math Work Places most days where students work in small groups at different ability levels.

In science we will continue to emphasize the 5 Senses as we move forward in our study of trees. We will learn the parts of a tree, observe changes in the trees as autumn progresses, collect, sort and observe leaves and other signs of Fall.

We will also learn about fire safety this month. We will have a special visit from the Apple Valley Firefighters! We will learn about smoke detectors, "stop, drop, and roll", and other important safety rules!

The last week of October we will have some fun with pumpkins, spiders, and bats, integrating them within the content areas of reading, writing, math and science. Our Harvest Party will be on Wednesday, October 31st. This is always a fun time for the students and a great way to end the month.
