Scientist of the Week
Liz Stryjewski (Biologist)
Liz is a biologist at the Kennedy Space Center. She is exploring the possibility of growing plants in space. If she is able to cultivate agricultural crops in this gravity-reduced atmosphere, future space travelers will have a reliable source of food while exploring!
Earth Science Week- Karen Block
Karin says, "Science Rocks!" She ought to know. Karin is an igneous petrologist-a volcano scientist-who studies the history of rocks beneath New York. Her work takes her across the Hudson River, where she investigates the rocks that form the Palisades Sill in New Jersey.
National Chemistry Week
Meg A. Mole Career Profiles: Read about all of Meg’s adventures! These interviews are an excellent to learn about the activities chemists perform everyday.
Dave Morris (Enthobotanist)
Dave is an ethnobotanist with the Pueblo Grande Museum in Phoenix, where he studies how native peoples in Arizona gathered plant materials for buildings, utilitarian objects, and spiritual uses. Dave says his own Native American ancestry makes him especially interested in recovering lost knowledge about plants and their uses.
John Muir (Naturalist)
- Attended the University of Wisconsin, 1860 - 1863 - Authored many books and influential writings detailing conservation and preservation ideas
- Called the "Father of the National Park System"
- Helped found the Sierra Club in 1892 and was president until his death
Laura Triplett (Environmental Geologist)
Laura is an Environmental Geologist-aka Mud Scientist-who studies how people affect the water quality of Minnesota's St. Croix River. Laura really digs her work, collecting layers of muck from the river to see how clear cutting of forests by early settlers and large developments being built today impact the environment. Aldo Leopold (Ecologist)
- Internationally respected scientist and conservationist instrumental in formulating policy, promoting wilderness, and restoring land back to health. - Instrumental in establishing the first official "wilderness area" in the United States (the Gila National Forest) - Helped to create The Wilderness Society, and founded the field of Wildlife Ecology. - His biggest contribution was his articulation of "The Land Ethic" (that we are part of a natural community of interdependent parts) and his pioneering work in what is now known as restoration ecology - bringing the land back to health.

3rd Grade - Lab Science
Third graders are exploring structures of life this fall. Look below at pictures from lab work with plant structures!
Students are using the Look Carefully STEM Scholar Habit of Mind!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Third graders are exploring and creating scale models of the solar system. They have been up to the challenge of "shrinking" the solar system to fit into the science lab and the school yard!  Third graders are working on the science process skill of measuring. Specifically, they are exploring measuring with liquids.
Key Vocabulary: Capacity = The volume of fluid a container can hold when full
Online Practice: Count on Us Can you fill it?
4th graders are exploring sound. What makes sound? How do you change sound? Students are observing and comparing how sound travels through solids, liquids, and air.
Key Vocabulary: Pitch = How high or low a sound is. Vibration = A rapid back-and-forth movement. Volume = The loudness of a sound.
"Sound" Science in Action!
Exploring the Relationship Between Pitch and Length
Exploring what makes sound - vibrations!
Exploring Pitch using Scratch and Sensory Boards!
5th Grade - Lab Science
5th graders are exploring Minnesota Biomes. The pictures below are from our October Field Study to Lebanon Hills. Students used digital cameras, GPS devices, and science notebooks to explore the biomes in the park.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5th Graders went to Lebanon Hills for a field study in May! They practiced their orienteering skills geocaching at the park! Students are now planning and conducting their own investigations in the B.U.Z.(Building Understanding Zone)!
April Science
5th Graders are starting a unit on Earth Science. Students are exploring maps and models. They are learning how to read and make topographic maps.
Key Vocabulary:
Model = a representation of an object or process Map = a drawing of an area, usually as though you were looking straight down on it Topographic Map = uses contour lines to show the shape and elevation of the land’s surface Cartographer = a person who makes maps
Making 3D Models from Topographic Maps!
1st Step: Determine Elevation and Record Data
2nd Step: Record Elevation Data into Excel and Create a 3D Model March Science 5th Graders are learning about chemistry. Students are making toothpaste and soda!
Key Vocabulary: Chemical reaction = The process in which two or more substances combine to make one or more new substances that have different properties than the original ones.Mixture = A substance containing two or more materials with different properties. Property = A characteristic of an object that can be observed, such as size, color, shape, or texture. Saturated solution = A solution in which as much solute as possible has been dissolved. Solution = A special mixture formed when one or more materials dissolves in another.
