Week of October 19th
Let us tell you what we did....

Specialist Update: In Phy.Ed. we did George of the Jungle. The most popular ropes course was probably the giant rope swing or the obstacle course. In music we just had our Cambodian Performance. Now we aren't really working on anything in particular.

Science: In science we are learning about Landforms. We have seen 3D maps on the computer. We have also learned about the formation of the Grand Canyon.

Reader's Workshop: In readers workshop we have lots of people doing skits. We have also added to our daily five word work. That is when we practice spelling or do our choice assignment.

Math: We have continued to switch classrooms for math class. We are all learning division, but at different paces. In general, we are learning how to write division word problems. We are also learning how to do long division and using remainders in the problem.

MATH ROCKS!http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/eg-flying-v-paul.jpg

During the first trimester fifth graders will be focusing on improving the speed and accuracy of their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division math facts. On Fact Fridays students will take a timed fact test. They must receive a 50/50 to pass onto the next level. Fifth graders will remain at the same level until they master it.

Four times a week fifth graders are expected to practice their math facts for 10-20 minutes. On Fact Friday the blue practice sheet will be collected. If this is not turned in, students will spend time in study hall practicing their facts.

Check out the many resources below to help you practice your facts. Websites! Game Ideas! Also suggest an activity or website in the forum.

The Liberation of Gabriel King

by K.L. Going

Gabriel King believes he was born chicken. He's afraid of spiders, corpses, loose cows, and just about everything related to the fifth grade. If it's a choice between raduating or staying in the fourth grade forever, he's going to stay put ─ only his best friend Frita Wilson won't hear of it.

"Gabe," says Frita, "we gotta do something about you." When Frita makes up her mind she's like a locomotive - there's no stopping her. "First you're going to make a list.
Write down everything you're afraid of."

Gabe's list is a lot longer than he'd like Frita to know. Plus, he can't quite figure out how tackling his fears will make him brave. Surely jumping off the rope swing over the catfish pond can only lead to certain death...But maybe Frita knows what she's doing. It turns out she's got her own list, and while she's watching Gabe tackle each of his fears, she's avoiding the fear that scares her the most.

With wisdom and clarity, K. L. Going explores the nature of fear in what should be an idyllic summer for two friends from different backgrounds. For them, living in a small town in Georgia with an active Ku Klux Klan, the summer of 1976 is a momentous one.

word study

Students will bring home a list of 20 words they have chosen in class to study for their weekly word study tests. The word study test will be on Thursdays. Each Thursday a weekly assignment is due. Students may choose their assignment from a list they have been provided.

Spelling City is an excellent online resource for students to practice words. There are games and interactive quizzes they can try. All of our word lists can be found at this website. Go to Find a List and search for a teacher, enter Ament and they should appear.
