    Mrs. Lan's middle school Mandarin Chinese classes!

    Students will build upon previously learned vocabulary as well as learn new vocabulary.  Some topics students will study are...

    days and dates, time, daily routines, colors, fruits/foods/drinks, storytelling, clothing, money, shopping, geography

    ALL STUDENTS will learn to read and write using Chinese characters, listen and speak in Mandarin Chinese, and tell stories in Chinese. All students will learn how to answer and ask questions in Chinese. All students will learn Chinese songs.

    We need all students to be risk takers in the classroom, be caring, and be principled human beings.

    Students who successfully complete this course (C average or better) can advance to the next level of Chinese.

    • Lesson: Time 现在几点了?


      点 o'clock、半 half (30 minutes)、分 minute、刻 quarter (15 minutes)、现在 now、了 (grammar word used to indicate a change in time)、零 ling: zero、两 two (i.e. two of something / when used with a measure word)、现在几点? what time is it now?、现在几点了? what time is it now?、上午 morning、中午 noon、下午 afternoon、晚上 evening or night

      Characters to memorize stroke order: 点、刻、两

      Tricky times - pay attention to 两 "liang" and 零 "ling."  Learn how to use 一刻 "yi ke," 半 "ban," and 三刻 "san ke" properly.

    • Chinese songs

      1.Listen to 5 (or more) NEW Chinese songs/m.v.s. List the 5 songs and artists and turn in the list.  (5 points)
      2.Choose one song that you’d like to present to class.  Online find the lyrics in pinyin, characters, and the English meaning.  Type it and print it. (9 points)
      3.Research the artist/group of that song.  Write a one paragraph summary of the artist.  For example, when and where born, year the song was published, other bands they have been in, other stories you find about them.  Include a one-two sentence summary about the lyrics of the song.  Include one sentence about why you like it. ( 5 points) 
      4.You can work by yourself or with a partner.  Due: Wednesday, January 14th, 2015.  20 points total.
      • "Mandarin Reader" Unit

        This unit is designed to help students develop fluency in reading, listening, speaking, and ultimately writing. We will engage with new and old vocabulary, read stories in Chinese, retell stories in Chinese, write simple summaries of stories in Chinese, and write our own stories using the same vocabulary in Chinese.

        These stories, about two students of Chinese named Harry and Min-Jee, use simple, high-frequency vocabulary.

            Classroom Presentations:

            Make a poster depicting a real or imaginary classroom and the objects within it.  You will make an in-class presentation in Chinese introducing the objects, the number of objects, and to whom they belong.  Here are some sample sentences:

            Introduce the object: 这是书。那是椅子。

            Introduce how many there are (use the most appropriate measure word): 有三个书包。有五支铅笔。书包里有两本书。教室里有二十把椅子。

            Introduce to whom the object belongs: 这是我的橡皮。这是老师的桌子。那是他的笔记本。那是兰老师的白板。
