Topic outline

  • Mrs. Lan's middle school Mandarin Chinese classes!

Mrs. Lan teaches Chinese 6a, 7, 7a, 8, and 8a at SHMS and Chinese A and Chinese C at RMS.

Some topics students will study are...

Chinese C / Chinese 8a -- Sports and hobbies, household objects, prepositions, other language names in Chinese, places around the school, transportation, and directions.  We will use the "Discovering Chinese" textbook as well as read chapters from the reader "Poor Anna."

ALL STUDENTS will learn to read and write using Chinese characters, listen and speak in Mandarin Chinese, and tell stories in Chinese. All students will learn how to answer and ask questions in Chinese. All students will learn Chinese songs.

We need all students to be risk takers in the classroom, be caring, and be principled human beings.

HIGH SCHOOL CHINESE: Chinese 2  in the high school is a challenging course for an incoming freshman.  My recommendation is that students that have maintained a "C" average or higher are encouraged to register for Chinese 2 in high school.  If students have not maintained C averages or higher throughout middle school, they should retake Chinese 1 in high school.  Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions.

Students who successfully complete this course (C average or better) can advance to the next level of Chinese.

    谢谢!

      Fluency Fast Stories

Fluency Fast stories are designed to build fluency in students' reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in Chinese.  There are six stories we read in class.  We will make story boards to help us then retell the stories orally.  Students will also reenact the stories to demonstrate listening comprehension.  At the end of the unit we will have a vocabulary test on new words.

      Homework:

      • Based on "Fluency Fast" story #1, create a 6-box storyboard that illustrates the main events and supporting details of the story.  Be sure to include a title, new word list, and a parent signature for retelling the story IN CHINESE at home.
      • Based on story #2, create a 6-box storyboard that illustrates the main events and supporting details of the story.  Be sure to include a title, new word list, and a parent signature for retelling the story IN CHINESE at home.
      • Based on story #3, write a summary of the main events and supporting details.  Write a summary five (5) sentences or longer.

      • Based on story #5, write a parallel story -- a story that uses the same key words, but is different from the one we read in class.
