IAreas of Focus
Math: Place Value: The students will be learning about the following targets during our place value unit. Target 1: Read and Write whole numbers to 100,000 Target 2: Compare and order whole number Target 3: Use rounding and estimation with whole numbers to solve real-world problems and mathematical problems. Target 4: Find 1,000 to 10,000 more or less than a number.
The students will be learning the math strategy game “Krypto.” Look for more information at parent orientation.
Problem Solving – The students will be learning how to solve problems using more than one strategy. Come to math night on October 5th from 6:30 – 7:30pm to learn more about this approach.
Science: Sound: What can change the pitch of a sound? That is one question the students will be trying to answer. The students will be inquiring into the relationship between the pitch of a sound, the rate of vibration of the source and factors that affect pitch.
Social Studies: Minnesota: The students will be starting their study of Minnesota History when we head off to Wolf Ridge Environmental Center. They will continue with an inquiry into: • People moved and settled in Minnesota for many reasons. • How the early inhabitants of Minnesota lived and worked. • The early inhabitants cultures contributed to the shaping of Minnesota. At the end of the unit, the students will be completing the following performance task: “You have been asked to “travel back in time”. Your purpose is to journal about your experiences (historical experiences and information about Minnesota) as you travel through the beginning of Minnesota history. The information in your journal will be used to create a multimedia presentation (I-Movie) on Minnesota History.”
Health: Bus Safety: The students will be reviewing how to stay safe at the bus stop and on a bus. Responsibility is a focus for fourth grade. The students will be using planners to help them learn how to be organized individuals.
Reading: Students will be learning how to do literature circles. They will be reading fiction stories about Minnesota History. In literature circles they will be reading books and discussing them in small groups. Students will also be working on predicting and learning about understanding characters.
Writing: Students will be writing narratives about events in their lives. Students will also be learning dictionary skills and the "must know" words for spelling.
