Speech/Language Pathologist - Stephanie Helgerson

Hi! My name is Stephanie, and I am one of two Speech-Language Pathologists at Scott Highlands. I’m starting my 6th year here at SHMS. I earned both my undergraduate degree in Communicative Disorders and my graduate degree in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls (Go Falcons!!!). I achieved my Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) in 2005 and I received my Autism Spectrum Disorders certificate from Hamline University in 2006. When I am not working, I enjoy reading and spending time with my husband and our dog, Maverick. This year is going to be a very exciting year for me; my husband and I are expecting our first baby in January!

One of the great things about my job and working at SHMS is that I get to work with a variety of students. No two class periods are the same and there is never a dull moment! My caseload consists of students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. All students on my caseload have one thing in common: a speech and/or language disability. For information on what is happening in my social skills class and my communications lab classes, please see the calendar on the right side of this page. For information on the center-based classrooms, please see below.

Center-Based Speech/Language Groups

I work with students from two center-based classrooms here at Scott Highlands Middle School. During my time with these students we work on activities that address the speech and language goals specific to their IEP. I may work one-on-one with students, in small groups and in large group activities with all the students together.

In the Developmental Cognitive Disabilities (DCD) classroom the students work in small groups on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursdays, we do a language activity with the entire class and on Fridays, we focus on social skills and game playing skills.

In the Communication Interaction Disorders (CID) classroom I work one-on-one with students Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, we do a large group language activity with the entire class.

What does a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) do?

Speech Includes:

Language Includes:
