family photo

Hello and welcome to my moodle page. I am very excited to to share our days events with and to also keep you informed on events that are planned at future times.

My full name is Shawn Huntley and I am currently teaching 7 students in the CID program at Scott Highlands Middle School. I have truly loved my experience here so far! The students and families that I work with are wonderful. Also, my colleagues at Scott Highlands have been an absolute joy to work with.

My wife Sarah and I recently had our second child (Lucas) as many of you are aware. He joined our family on 8/3/09. He is doing very well. His brother, Elijah is also doing very well.

I look forward to continuing my education at St. Thomas University this winter. I am seeking my Master's degree in Special Education with a focus on Autism Spectrum Disorders.

CID Resources

The CID program at Scott Highlands utilizes numerous resources. These include speech therapy with Stephanie Helgerson. She truly loves her job and goes above and beyond her job duties to ensure our students get the help they deserve. We also have a wonderful occupational therapist in Raedi Zimmer. She has provided our class with many useful sensory items and ideas that have proven to be a huge success with our students. She is currently working closely with our class in the area of fine motor and writitng. We also have a spectacular DAPE teacher in Christi Walker. She has built wonderful relationships with all of our students and continues to provide them the help they need. The school also provides a sensory room and music therapy.

Please use the resources below for your educational needs. Also, If you know of any helpful websites please let me know and I will add them to this page.

How does Mr. Huntley's CID program work??
My philosophy is that every student deserves a chance to reach their full potential. I believe that strong relationships with students, parents, aides, administration and other teachers is the key to unlocking this potential. My CID (Communication Interaction Disorder) program focuses on communication and social skills throughout the entire day. My students are expected to use full sentences (if able) when communicating. My students use a variety of ways to communicate such as verbal words, pictures, augmentative communication devices, gestures and some sign language. I have high expectations of my students in every aspect of school such as academics, behavior, communication and relationships. My students are expected to give their best effort in every situation throughout the day. I push my students out of their comfort zone at times so they are able to learn how to deal with frustration in a positive manner. It is a challenging but very rewarding program.

I also believe in inclusion. It is my goal to include my students with their mainstream peers as much as they are able. So far this has proven to be a great success and watching my students use their social and communication skills they learned in a small group setting and generalizing those skills in the mainstream environment. I have also informed my students mainstream classmates and teachers about autism. Click on the inclusion link below to view my presentation.
