Welcome to Mr. Turk's Class Page

welcome
Thanks to all of you for coming to the fall conferences. Please continue to support us at Diamond Path by checking planners and letting your son or daughter know that extra effort is the key to success.

Mr. Turk’s Classroom Rules

1.When responding to an adult you must answer by saying yes sir or no ma’am. Just nodding your head or saying any other form of yes or no is not acceptable.

2. Make eye contact. When someone is speaking, keep your eyes on him or her at all times. If someone makes a comment, turn and face that person.

3. If you win or do well at something, do not brag. If you lose, do not show anger.

4. If you are asked a question in conversation, you should ask a question in return. It is only polite to show others that you are just as interested in them as they are in you.

5. Always say thank you when I give you something. There is no excuse for not showing appreciation.

6. When grading another student’s paper, the only marks you are allowed to make on the paper are an X and the number they got incorrect.

7. When we read together in class, you must follow along. If I call on you to read, you must know exactly where we are and begin reading immediately.

8. If you ever ask me for a reward it will not be given.

9. Homework will be turned in each day for each subject by every student with no exceptions.

10. When we are in transition from one subject to another, the change will be swift, quiet, and orderly. The opportune time to spend in transition should be less then 20 seconds and we will work toward a goal of 15 seconds.

11. You will make every effort to be as organized as possible.

12. When I assign homework, there is to be no moaning or complaining. This will result in a double assignment.

13. While you are with a substitute teacher you will obey the same rules that you follow when I am with you.

14. Do not ask me if you can get water while I am teaching a lesson.

15. Learn the names of other teachers in the school and greet them by saying things like good morning Mr. Turk. If we are in a line, only the line leader will greet the person.

16. Do not save seats in the lunchroom. Do not try to exclude anyone. We are a family, and we must treat one another with respect and kindness.

17. If someone bumps into you, even if it is not your fault, say, “Excuse me.”

18. During an assembly, do not speak and do not look around and try to get the attention of your friends.

19. When we return from a field trip you will shake the hand of every chaperone and thank them for taking the time to take you on the field trip.

20. When in a line, walk single file, two feet behind the person in front of you with your arms at your side. There will be absolutely no talking.

21. Never use the word bald in my presence, it makes me hungry.

22. If your parents bring something to school that you forgot, you must give them a two arm hug to show your appreciation.

23. Do not use the bathroom while I am directly teaching the whole class. Only one person may use the pass at a time.

24. Line up in a quiet orderly fashion.

25. Do not sharpen your pencil when I am talking.

Important Dates and Events:

For the most current and comprehensive listing of Diamond Path events,
visit the School Calendar page. We would like to invite you this Friday to see the fifth grade students performing in a Cambodian music program. The performance will be from 2:30-3:30 in the gym. You can get more information from your son or daughter about this special event.

MCA-III Math Field Test
Many schools and districts have been asked by the Minnesota Department of Education to participate in a field test of the new MCA III. All elementary schools in District 196 have at least one grade level involved in the opportunity. Diamond Path’s 5th graders will have a practice session during the first week of December. Teachers and students will get their first look at the innovative items being developed for this test which is scheduled for spring of 2011. It will be replacing the current MCA II.

Areas of Focus for the First Trimester:
In reading we are working on the In the Wild theme. We will be reading books from one of my favorite authors, Gary Paulsen. We will continue using Time for Kids as a resource for nonfiction reading. We have also been using the TFK magazine to write "Thorough Answers", also known as the 4-step method to answering a question. I have been very impressed with how quickly the class has been able to pick up this concept. Our writing time is also being used to create a fiction writing piece based on the Wayside School books.
In math we are beginning a unit on division. This unit might be challenging at first as the students learn some new strategies to divide larger numbers.
Our science unit is landforms and will include a live video conference from the Grand Canyon.
